Flags across Africa are more than symbols—they are powerful narratives of anti-colonial resistance, independence, and regional unity. In Bamako, Malians recently raised the new flag of the Alliance of Sahel States, which features a baobab tree and stars for Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso. The flag’s green links back to Ethiopia’s historic tricolor, which inspired Pan-Africanism and continues to influence designs across the continent. From Ghana’s Black Star of Africa to Tunisia’s crescent and star, these emblems carry political, religious, and cultural meaning. Meanwhile, changes to these flags, such as South Africa’s post-apartheid flag or Mauritania’s 2017 update, reflect historical turning points, making these icons enduring markers of Africa’s struggles, aspirations, and evolving identities.
