Africa’s Soaring Imports from China Ignite Calls to Fix Growing Trade Gap

Chinese exports to Africa surged 25% in the first seven months of 2025, reaching $122 billion, with Nigeria, South Africa, and Egypt among the top importers. Demand for construction machinery, cars, steel, and solar panels fueled the rise, putting shipments on track to surpass $200 billion this year. However, this growth has reignited concerns over Africa’s substantial and widening trade deficit with China, which stood at nearly $62 billion in 2024. Experts argue that closing this gap requires Africa to accelerate industrialization and move beyond exporting raw materials to adding value locally. While China’s new zero-tariff policy for most African nations is a welcome step, leveraging untapped areas like tourism and services could be key to building a more balanced and mutually beneficial trade relationship.
