Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud recently made a historic visit, the first by a Somali president in four decades, to the town of Las Anood, using the moment to firmly reject Israel’s recognition of the breakaway region of Somaliland. He framed Jerusalem’s move as an attempt to divide Somalia, vowing that national unity remains “untouchable.” While Somaliland’s leadership insists Las Anood remains its territory, the enthusiastic reception to Mohamud’s visit underscored significant local support for the federal government, dealing a symbolic blow to Somaliland’s secessionist ambitions. Analysts suggest this escalation has now elevated a long-simmering dispute into a potential international fault line, rallying Somalia’s allies who prioritize regional stability. However, while strengthening Somalia’s diplomatic hand, Israel’s recognition is unlikely to be reversed and risks drawing more external actors into this volatile Horn of Africa standoff.
