After Trump Pulled the Plug, Africa’s Power Dream Finds New Spark

By SG Editor·
Electricity access in Africa remains limited, with over 600 million people lacking reliable power so.

Although Donald Trump defunded Barack Obama’s Power Africa initiative, the dream of electrifying the continent remains alive. Launched in 2013, Power Africa sought to provide electricity to the 600 million Africans who don’t have it. The initiative mobilized billions in renewable energy investments across the continent and had succeeded in connecting 200 million Africans to electricity before the program’s sudden shutdown. While many feared its closure would derail Africa’s energy transition, new players like the Global Energy Alliance and Private Infrastructure Development Group are stepping in to fill the void. Investors now see opportunity, not just risk, as African nations build homegrown renewable energy solutions, leveraging domestic capital and partnerships. And although aid flows are dwindling, solar, wind, and hydro projects are gaining ground across the continent.
