An Al-Qaeda-linked group, Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM), has claimed responsibility for Tuesday’s armed assault on a military training camp in Bamako, Mali. The attackers, described as “terrorists,” targeted a gendarmerie school near the city’s airport. ORTM reported that the situation is now “under control” following intense gunfire. Mali has been grappling with an Islamist insurgency for over a decade. The military, which seized power in a 2021 coup, accused the previous government of failing to stop the insurgency. However, violence persists despite the change of power.
