Algeria Begins Construction on Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline

Algeria has launched construction of a new 1,210-kilometer section of the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline, a landmark project that will carry natural gas from Nigeria through Niger and Algeria to European markets. This particular section will connect the Niger border to Algeria’s existing gas network. The full pipeline stretches 4,327 kilometers, linking Nigeria’s Warri city to Algeria’s Hassi R’Mel gas field—the continent’s largest. Upon completion, it is expected to transport over 20 billion cubic meters of gas annually. Niger also confirmed plans to begin construction of its 720-kilometer section in early 2027. Algeria’s Energy Minister Mohamed Arkab described the project as a catalyst for economic development, employment, and African energy integration.
