Tensions between France and Algeria escalated this week after Algiers gave 12 French embassy officials 48 hours to leave. The move follows the indictment of three Algerians in France, including a consular official, on suspicion of involvement in the abduction of Algerian opposition figure Amir Boukhors in Paris. Algeria’s foreign ministry called France’s actions an “unacceptable judicial conspiracy” and warned that the incident could severely damage bilateral relations. In response, France urged Algeria to rescind its decision, warning that it would have no choice but to retaliate if Algiers presses ahead with the expulsion. This diplomatic rift comes at a delicate time as both countries were in the process of mending ties strained by previous diplomatic incidents.
