Algeria has announced its decision to cut diplomatic ties with the United Arab Emirates. Algiers cited years of unresolved tension as the reason for its decision, accusing Abu Dhabi of interfering in national and regional affairs. The Algerian foreign ministry said it had repeatedly warned the UAE about its conduct, but ultimately concluded that efforts to preserve bilateral relations had been exhausted. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune previously accused the UAE of seeking to destabilize countries including Libya, Mali and Sudan, and has sharply criticized its regional influence. Both countries have been at odds for years over a number of issues, which include the UAE’s decision to normalize relations with Israel in 2020. Tensions also flared last year when a UAE-based media company aired an interview with a historian who made remarks questioning Algeria’s Amazigh heritage.
