South Africa’s November 4 municipal elections are expected to reshape the country’s political landscape, with growing voter dissatisfaction threatening the African National Congress’s dominance. Polls suggest the party could secure just 31% to 34% of the vote, down significantly from the more than 60% it received in the 2011 local elections. While the Democratic Alliance is attracting many former ANC supporters, voters are also shifting toward smaller parties, including the Economic Freedom Fighters and Jacob Zuma’s uMkhonto weSizwe. With few outright winners likely, parties will have to form coalitions to govern, especially in big cities like Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni, and Tshwane. However, critics of coalitions point to the failure of previous arrangements to deliver political stability and improve municipal services. Nevertheless, analysts say the ANC and DA could steady key cities. However, neither party appears eager to embrace the prospect.
