ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula has warned that a weak showing in November’s local government elections could trigger an internal revolt against the party’s current leadership. Speaking at a briefing, Mbalula acknowledged that another poor result, following the ANC’s declining support in the 2021 local elections and 2024 national election, would reflect badly on those in charge. He linked this year’s vote directly to the party’s 2027 leadership election, suggesting rivals could use a loss to push for change before the current leadership’s term runs out. Conversely, a strong performance would give the current leadership greater room to defend its record. Despite the warning, Mbalula insisted the ANC is campaigning to win, not preparing for defeat. The outcome of the elections will test whether South Africa’s long-dominant liberation movement can arrest its declining support or faces renewed pressure to reshape its leadership.
