Angola is set to launch fuel production at its first new refinery in 50 years, marking a milestone in efforts to reduce dependence on costly imports. The Cabinda refinery, with an initial capacity of 30,000 barrels per day, is expected to begin operations before the end of 2025, supplying up to 10% of domestic fuel demand. This strategic project, led by London-based Gemcorp, aims to significantly reduce the nation’s heavy reliance on expensive fuel imports, which currently account for 72% of the country’s needs. The refinery’s start-up is a key part of the government’s plan to phase out costly fuel subsidies, a policy that has previously triggered social unrest. Meanwhile, plans are already underway to double capacity and expand output to include diesel and jet fuel.
