The African Union (AU) has rejected the recent formation of a rival government by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan, warning it threatens the nation’s unity and peace efforts. Unveiled in Darfur, the RSF-backed “government of peace and unity” named Mohamed Hassan al-Ta’ayshi as prime minister and RSF leader General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo as head of a new presidential council. In response, the AU urged international actors not to recognize the move, citing the risk of Sudan’s fragmentation. The AU reaffirmed support for the Port Sudan-based transitional government, backed by the rival Sudanese army, and ongoing peace initiatives. Similarly, the Arab League condemned the RSF’s move, warning that it could divide Sudan into “warring cantons.”
