The African Union is under growing pressure to redesign its peace mission in Somalia after the United States announced it will end logistical funding for the African Union Stabilisation and Support Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) after December 2026. Washington argues that Somalia has failed to assume sufficient responsibility for its own security, while years of donor fatigue and limited progress have exposed the shortcomings of a military-led approach. Analysts recommend replacing AUSSOM with a leaner political mission supported by regional security cooperation to preserve gains against al-Shabaab while advancing governance and state-building. The funding decision shifts leverage away from external donors and toward the AU and Somali authorities, who must now define a sustainable security model. Although Somalia risks a dangerous security vacuum, the transition also presents an opportunity to prioritize political reconciliation over indefinite military intervention.
