Cameroon’s ruling party convened a rare leadership meeting as scrutiny intensifies over President Paul Biya’s 45-day absence from the country. The 93-year-old leader, who has governed since 1982, left for what officials described as a brief private visit to Europe on June 7 but has not returned. Officials have also not provided a timeline for his return. Party secretary-general Jean Nkuete called the meeting without disclosing its agenda, and officials gave no indication it was tied to Biya’s absence. He has often spent long stretches abroad, but this trip is his longest yet, fueling speculation about his health. Opposition figures have called for clarity, with one lawmaker suggesting the presidency should be declared vacant. Lawmakers approved reinstating a vice president role in April, who would succeed Biya if something were to happen, but it remains unfilled.
