Boko Haram’s AI Use Signals Wider Security Threat

New research based on interviews with former Boko Haram members suggests terrorist groups are increasingly using generative artificial intelligence to improve battlefield operations. According to the study, militants have relied on AI guidance to modify motorcycles for jumping defensive trenches, troubleshoot weapons, refine attack plans, translate technical information, and support logistics. Although major technology companies say they have strengthened protections against misuse, researchers argue that determined actors continue to bypass safety measures. The research shows that AI provides terrorist networks with low-cost technical expertise, once available only through specialized training. In contrast, governments and AI developers face mounting pressure to strengthen security and oversight. Over the longer term, the study highlights that AI governance is becoming an increasingly important national security issue, requiring closer cooperation between governments and technology companies to curb malicious use.
