Botswana has become the 68th country and the sixth African nation to sign NASA’s Artemis Accords, reinforcing its ambitions to build a competitive space sector after launching its first satellite, Botsat-1, in 2025. The agreement builds on the successful 2025 launch of Botsat-1, the world’s first national satellite built by a country without a dedicated space agency, developed through the Botswana International University of Science and Technology. Experts say joining the accords will boost Botswana’s international credibility, strengthen partnerships, and support the development of local expertise in engineering, satellite operations, and space technology. Although the agreement does not guarantee funding or participation in NASA missions, it offers opportunities for collaboration and greater involvement in shaping global space governance. With Africa’s space economy projected to approach $40 billion by 2030, Botswana hopes to transform its early achievements into a sustainable national space ecosystem.
