Burkina Faso has officially severed diplomatic relations with France, marking another significant step in the military government’s campaign to distance the country from its former colonial ruler. The government, led by Captain Ibrahim Traore, accused France of pursuing neo-colonial ambitions, interfering in Burkina Faso’s internal affairs, and supporting networks that undermine national security. Officials said the decision followed a review of bilateral relations and reflected the absence of mutual trust and respect for sovereignty. Despite the diplomatic split, authorities emphasized that cultural, historical, and people-to-people ties would remain intact and that French citizens in Burkina Faso would continue to receive legal protection. The move reflects a broader regional trend, with several Sahel nations strengthening ties with Russia and China while reducing French influence.
