Burkina Faso’s leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has intensified his confrontation with influential Muslim scholars by declaring a campaign against what he calls “radical Islam,” following the enactment of the controversial Religious Freedoms Law. The legislation introduces tougher oversight of religious organizations and penalties for practices that authorities classify as abuses. Recent arrests of prominent imams have further fueled tensions with Sunni religious leaders, many of whom once supported Traoré’s government. The military leader has also directed the recall of hundreds of thousands of Burkinabe students studying Islamic law abroad, arguing they should pursue practical skills that contribute to national development. Traore’s moves grant him tighter state control over religious institutions while reinforcing his image as a secular reformer. However, they also put at risk a support base that once bolstered his rule. The long-term question is whether asserting dominance over religious authority strengthens his government or deepens instability within one of Burkina Faso’s most influential social bases.
