Burundi’s former Foreign Minister Ézéchiel Nibigira has been appointed president of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), taking over from Angola’s Gilberto Verissimo. Nibigira, appointed to a five-year term during a summit in Equatorial Guinea, brings diplomatic and political experience to the job, including roles as Burundi’s ambassador to Kenya and minister for the East African Community. His leadership comes at a critical time, with ongoing violence in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo topping his agenda. Strained Burundi-Rwanda relations further complicate regional stability, and Kigali’s recent withdrawal from ECCAS over perceived bias adds to the challenges Nibigira faces. Beyond security, Nibigira must push forward reforms to restore the bloc’s credibility after accusations of mismanagement plagued the past administration.
