Cameroonian-born designer Imane Ayissi has earned accolades for his Autumn 2026/2027 haute couture collection, presented at the latest Paris Fashion Week. Ayissi, a former ballet dancer and runway model for brands like Yves Saint Laurent and Givenchy, became the first sub-Saharan African designer admitted to Paris’s exclusive haute couture calendar in 2020, after decades of repeated rejections. Since then, he has set about redefining haute couture by blending African craftsmanship with European tailoring. His designs combine luxurious fabrics such as Italian silk and Japanese cotton with traditional African textiles, including Ghanaian kente, Nigerian adire, and Malian bogolan, showcasing the continent’s rich cultural diversity. Beyond fashion, Ayissi advocates for greater investment in African textile production, arguing that processing raw materials locally would create jobs and strengthen economies. Through his work and recent autobiography, he continues to champion African creativity on one of the fashion industry’s most prestigious stages.
