Ukrainian officials say nearly 3,000 Africans have fought or are fighting for Russia in the war, including Cameroonians. Meanwhile, Cameroon has confirmed that 16 of its citizens have died in military action in Ukraine, although analysts believe the numbers are much higher. Experts say that while economic desperation makes Russian offers to Cameroonians attractive, Russia-linked networks also use cultural and educational programs to recruit. To halt Russia’s recruitment, analysts call on Cameroon to improve job opportunities, warn citizens, and engage Moscow over recruitment practices.
