Cameroonian President Paul Biya, 91, returned to the nation’s capital Yaoundé on Monday after several weeks abroad, quelling rumors about his health. Biya, who has ruled Cameroon for over four decades, was greeted by cheering supporters, with the state broadcaster CRTV showcasing his arrival. Questions arose after he disappeared from public view following his departure from a China-Africa summit in Beijing in early September. Speculation intensified when Biya missed the UN General Assembly in September and a French-speaking nations’ summit in early October. In response to the rumors, the government released a statement on October 8 promising his return and later banned local media from discussing his condition. According to flight tracking sites, Biya’s plane departed from Geneva, corroborating claims by government sources that Biya had been residing in the Swiss city for several weeks.
