Geordin Hill-Lewis is emerging as the frontrunner to lead the Democratic Alliance, South Africa’s second-largest party, ahead of a leadership vote scheduled for April in Johannesburg. If elected, the 39-year-old would replace John Steenhuisen while continuing to serve as mayor of Cape Town. The DA, which captured 22% of the 2024 national vote, sits inside President Cyril Ramaphosa’s ten-party coalition government. As a result, Hill-Lewis’s win would immediately hand him influence in Pretoria. The party hopes his governance record will help expand support beyond its traditional voter base. However, rivals inside and outside the party question whether the leadership choice broadens its appeal among a largely Black electorate. In the long run, Hill-Lewis’s tenure as DA leader will test whether the party can successfully transcend historical racial boundaries strictly through a platform of economic efficiency and public service.
