Cape Town is fast becoming Africa’s answer to Boston and Cambridge, drawing global investors with its rich university ecosystem, among other things. The city’s concentration of top universities, including the University of Cape Town, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, and the University of the Western Cape, is said to produce a “cluster effect” similar to the UK’s Cambridge-Oxford and the USA’s Boston. These universities ensure there is a steady supply of talents and research that can underpin companies. The city has also benefited from a wave of financial sector migration and a steady influx of remote workers and digital nomads, further raising its appeal as a startup hub. However, challenges remain, including unequal access to international capital for black founders.
