Cape Verde Advances Digital Port Modernization

Cape Verde is advancing plans to introduce a Maritime Single Window at the Port of Mindelo. The platform will centralize information exchange among the authorities involved in ship arrivals, port stays, and departures, allowing information to be submitted through a single digital interface instead of multiple paper-based processes. Supported by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the initiative aims to shorten vessel turnaround times and improve cargo clearance. The project will also help Cape Verde meet IMO requirements, which mandate Maritime Single Window systems for member states. The initiative addresses a broader industry challenge: rising cargo volumes are increasing congestion risks worldwide. The problem is particularly acute in Africa. According to a recent World Bank report, African ports generally lag behind global peers, with vessels usually facing longer stays due to limited capacity and weak transport connectivity. The reform will help Cape Verde improve this metric, making the country more competitive regionally.
