A ceasefire monitoring mission has arrived in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo to assess compliance with a truce between government forces and Rwanda-backed M23 rebels, even as fighting persists on the ground. The team arrived in Minembwe in South Kivu province, following an agreement on a roadmap for peace talks between Kinshasa and M23 rebels. The mission includes representatives of the Congolese government and M23, alongside observers from members of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region. It is also expected to visit Uvira and Kalehe, areas affected by recent fighting. The ceasefire stems from a Qatari-mediated agreement signed in Doha in July 2025, part of broader US- and Qatar-led peace efforts.
