President Faustin-Archange Touadera of the Central African Republic has officially declared his bid for a third term after he was nominated by the United Hearts Movement party. Though his second term was expected to be his last, a 2023 constitutional referendum removed the two-term limit and extended presidential terms from five to seven years. This cleared the path for him to seek re-election. Touadera, 68, first took office in 2016. He won re-election in 2020, but faced strong opposition from rebel groups who sought to overturn his victory. Since his election, he has relied on foreign allies, most notably Russia’s Wagner Group, to maintain control amid a long-running civil conflict. An exact date has yet to be announced for the December elections.
