Chad has announced plans to withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC). The country accuses the tribunal of disproportionately targeting African nations, citing the fact that nine of the ICC’s 13 investigations since its founding in 2002 have focused on African countries. Government spokesman Gassim Cherif, who said Chad had formally notified UN Secretary-General António Guterres of its decision, described the court as an instrument of “neocolonialism” and said the decision aligns with a broader pan-African push for judicial reform. Chad joins Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, which also announced plans to leave the ICC last year. However, Burundi remains the only African country to have completed its withdrawal.
