In a powerful homecoming speech at Enugu’s inaugural Things Fall Apart festival, renowned author and activist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie called for unity among the Igbo people amid rising violence by an armed separatist movement in southeastern Nigeria. Adichie, dressed in vibrant African prints, lamented the region’s loss of warmth and identity, urging Igbos to “clean our own house” and unite before demanding political justice. The week-long festival celebrated Chinua Achebe’s seminal novel with reimagined village scenes, theater, and cultural performances. Adichie’s keynote also echoed Achebe’s themes—preserving language, dignity, and humanity—while spotlighting her new novel, Dream Count. For many, especially the youth, the festival sparked cultural reflection and pride, affirming that Igbo traditions remain resilient despite modern challenges.
