Nigeria is deepening its defense ties with China through a new deal that will see local production of military-grade ammunition and servicing of defense equipment. The agreement, revealed during a visit by Defense Minister Bello Matawalle to China, includes building production lines in the northern state of Kaduna, knowledge transfer, and enhancing Nigeria’s defense capabilities through advanced Chinese technology. Talks also explored air defense collaboration, including radar systems and laser counter-drone tech. The deal reflects China’s broader strategy to expand military influence in Africa via initiatives like Peace Unity-2024, which promotes training, joint exercises, and security partnerships. This growing alliance positions China as a major player in Africa’s defense landscape and a key partner in Nigeria’s military modernization.
