On the outskirts of Cairo, Egypt’s new satellite lab—initially celebrated as Africa’s first homegrown facility—now reveals a significant Chinese presence. Although touted as a milestone in local satellite production, most equipment and components are imported from Beijing, with Chinese scientists guiding assembly and training Egyptian engineers. This lab is a key part of China’s broader strategy to build space alliances in Africa by donating satellites, ground stations, and advanced telescopes for both civilian and military applications. In contrast to China, which is deepening its technological ties with African nations, the United States is winding down its involvement with the continent. This presents an opportunity for China as, with its investment in Africa’s space sector, it can enhance its global surveillance network and secure strategic partnerships in a rapidly evolving space race.
