China has pledged to fast-track zero-tariff measures for African countries, signaling expanded economic opportunities for West Africa. The commitment was announced in Abuja by Chinese Ambassador Yu Dunhai during a meeting with ECOWAS Commission President Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, where he praised ECOWAS’ decades of work in regional integration and democratic governance. Yu said the initiative aligns with China’s 15th Five-Year Plan, which aims to share development gains globally. He also highlighted long-standing cooperation between Beijing and ECOWAS, including China’s support in building the ECOWAS headquarters. Touray welcomed the move, emphasizing ECOWAS’ admiration for China’s progress and its readiness to deepen collaboration as both sides look to strengthen their partnership.
