A pivotal partnership will bring Namibia its second major desalination plant, addressing critical water scarcity in one of Africa’s driest nations. Swakop Uranium, a subsidiary of China’s state-owned nuclear giant, has formed a joint venture with Namibia’s water utility, NamWater, to construct the facility near Swakopmund. This new plant, slated to produce 20 million cubic meters of water annually, aims to provide a stable supply for the massive Husab uranium mine—the world’s largest open-pit uranium operation—and the surrounding communities. The project, a long-planned initiative dating back to 1998, has now entered its implementation phase, including detailed engineering and financing. This development marks a significant step in securing water resources for Namibia’s key industrial and regional needs.
