China’s Zijin Mining is set to launch the Democratic Republic of Congo’s first lithium production in June from the massive Manono deposit, marking a major shift in Africa’s critical minerals landscape. The project, operated through a joint venture with state miner Cominiere, follows Congo’s decision to reassign permits previously held by Australian firm AVZ Minerals, a move now under arbitration. Despite lithium prices remaining far below their 2022 peaks, Zijin plans to begin exports immediately. The Chinese company will market all early output, including Congo’s share.
