Congolese presidential candidates make final campaign push ahead of election.

Congolese candidates rally for votes as the presidential election approaches in Congo.

Presidential campaigning in Republic of the Congo will draw to a close on Friday as candidates make their final appeals ahead of Sunday’s vote. Seven contenders are competing for the nation’s top office, including veteran opposition figures Joseph Kignoumbi Kia Mboungou and Anguios Nganguia Engambe. Mboungou is running for the fifth time since 2002, while Engambe is contesting for the fourth consecutive time. Alongside these, a fresh crop of first-time independent and party leaders is also stepping onto the stage. However, attention remains firmly on longtime leader Denis Sassou Nguesso, who is widely expected to extend his decades-long grip on power. Backed by the ruling Congolese Workers’ Party and a coalition of around 20 allied parties, Sassou Nguesso enters the race with significant political momentum.
