Congo’s Ebola outbreak has surpassed 2,000 deaths, becoming the fastest-growing outbreak of the disease on record. According to data provided by the government, the outbreak has recorded 4,381 confirmed cases and 2,011 deaths, with the death toll doubling from 1,000 in roughly three weeks after the first milestone took about nine weeks. The death toll also climbed nearly three times faster than during the 2014-16 outbreak, which is the worst on record. Meanwhile, the current outbreak is already the second-largest on record. It has been exacerbated by rebel conflict, poor roads, disrupted communications, and health-worker strikes, which have made surveillance and treatment difficult. Unlike past outbreaks, this outbreak involves the rare Bundibugyo virus, for which no approved vaccine exists. However, clinical trials for potential vaccines and treatments are underway.
