The Democratic Republic of Congo’s Ebola outbreak has surpassed 9,000 confirmed cases since authorities declared the epidemic in May. As of October 13, the country had recorded 9,066 cases and 4,381 deaths, producing a case fatality rate of 48.3%. Seven provinces have been affected: Haut-Uele, Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Bas-Uele, Tshopo, and South-Ubangi. The outbreak is now the largest and deadliest ever recorded in Congo and the world’s second-largest Ebola epidemic, surpassed only by the West African epidemic of 2014 to 2016. Meanwhile, Africa CDC has urged countries in the region to bolster preparedness after Kenya reported its first imported Ebola case last week.
