The Western Cape High Court has dismissed the EFF’s urgent bid to halt a 4% increase in the General Fuel Levy, set to take effect this week. The EFF argued that the hike—16c per liter for petrol and 15c for diesel—violates constitutional rights and burdens the working class. They claimed Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana overstepped legal bounds by announcing the levy in his Budget speech without parliamentary approval. However, the court sided with Treasury, which argued the levy is a regulatory charge, not a tax. Despite the ruling, fuel prices are expected to decrease due to favorable global oil trends and a stronger rand, offering temporary relief at the pump even as the levy hike kicks in.
