Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Geordin Hill-Lewis says he will push for greater consultation within South Africa’s ruling coalition while reaffirming his party’s commitment to it. The DA joined the government of national unity two years ago after the African National Congress lost its majority in 2024, and tensions have flared between both parties over tax, land, and education policy, with the DA alleging it is frequently excluded from major decisions. In his first major speech since taking over in April, Hill-Lewis declared the party would not stay quiet when excluded from consultation. He defended the decision to join the coalition as necessary to keep “destructive populists” from gaining power, calling it the right choice despite ongoing friction with the ANC.
