Designer Brings Zulu Heritage Into Modern Furniture
South African designer Siyanda Mbele is translating Zulu heritage into contemporary furniture through Pinda Furniture and Interior Design. Named after the isiZulu word phinda, meaning “again” or “repeat,” Pinda reflects Mbele’s belief in continually refining and reinterpreting ideas. His work draws heavily on Zulu traditions, particularly the intricate geometry and mathematical precision found in beadwork, to create pieces that balance striking aesthetics with cultural influences. The Mvelo Desk, created in 2016, demonstrated Mbele’s ability to combine artistic expression with functional engineering and was nominated among South Africa’s Most Beautiful Objects in 2018. His more recent Zulu Chair, showcased at Maison&Objet in Paris, went further by incorporating ergonomics suited to African bodies, creating a piece that visitors praised for its artistry and comfort.
