Instead, youth in countries like Tanzania, Cameroon and Zambia are turning to street protests and digital organizing to demand change, often facing government crackdowns and surveillance in response. Experts note that this shift mirrors patterns from the 2011 Arab Spring. But unlike then, authorities have learned to monitor and suppress online movements. Nevertheless, young people are pressing on with their demands, seeking to challenge the status quo and push for political reform. Eventually, these evolving forms of engagement could reshape democratic accountability, leadership pipelines, and civic culture. Even where immediate political change remains elusive, the growth of youth-led networks is creating new foundations for future political influence across the continent.
