DR Congo Begins Ebola Vaccine Trial

By Le Monde·Edited by Editor TO·

The Democratic Republic of Congo has launched its first clinical trial of an Ebola vaccine during an outbreak that has surpassed 9,700 cases and caused over 4,600 deaths. The epidemic is driven by the Bundibugyo species, for which no vaccines or treatments are approved. The trial began on October 23 in Bunia, with the World Health Organization supporting the Congolese-led effort. Dubbed Tumaini, Swahili for hope, the trial will test whether Ervebo, licensed against the more common Zaire strain of the virus, offers cross-protection. The trial uses a single framework that can assess the safety and effectiveness of multiple vaccine candidates. Two additional candidates designed specifically for Bundibugyo are also in development. The findings could help guide efforts to contain the outbreak and improve future Ebola preparedness.
