The Democratic Republic of the Congo has taken a significant step to tackle corruption, as President Félix Tshisekedi approved the creation of a specialized criminal court dedicated exclusively to economic and financial crimes. Based in Kinshasa, the court will prosecute offenses ranging from embezzlement and fraud to currency counterfeiting, supported by a newly established prosecutor’s office. Spearheaded by Justice Minister Constant Mutamba, the initiative aims to strengthen the country’s judicial capacity and improve accountability. Beyond judicial reform, analysts note that effective anti-corruption institutions could send a powerful positive signal to investors at a time when Congo is actively courting international capital to develop its vast resource wealth. However, they caution that the court’s success will depend heavily on the integrity and expertise of appointed judges, as well as broader institutional reforms.
