Egypt, Somalia, and Eritrea are discussing the possibility of building a security alliance. However, the move threatens to further worsen tensions in the Horn of Africa. According to a statement by the Egyptian presidency, the three countries are meeting to discuss “bilateral ties and stability in the Horn of Africa and Red Sea.” The dispatch also revealed that all three countries will hold a tripartite summit. The budding relationship between Egypt, Somalia, and Eritrea is bound to set off alarm bells in Ethiopia, which has ongoing diplomatic issues with Somalia and Egypt. In January, Ethiopia signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Somaliland that will see it recognize Somaliland’s independence in exchange for access to the Red Sea. This set off issues with Somalia, which considers Somaliland as a part of its territory. Ethiopia’s grouse with Egypt centers around an Ethiopian dam on the river Nile which Egypt contends will affect its access to the river.
