Egypt’s Sisi Vows to Leave Office in 2030

By Reuters·Edited by Editor TO·

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has reaffirmed that he will leave office when his current term expires in 2030, while announcing plans to prepare a new generation of national leaders. Speaking at a graduation ceremony at the Egyptian Military Academy, the 71-year-old president proposed a 30-month training program for candidates holding PhDs from top universities in Egypt and abroad. Participants would study the state and its resources, preparing them for positions ranging from the presidency to ministerial, gubernatorial, and parliamentary offices. A committee led by the speaker of parliament, with participation from intellectuals, politicians, and government ministers, will establish selection criteria and draft the necessary legislation. Sisi has governed since 2014 and secured reelection for his current term in December 2023.
