Italian energy giant Eni has announced a significant gas and condensate discovery off Côte d’Ivoire’s coast, marking a major breakthrough after a decade of operations in the West African nation. The newly discovered Calao South field, found through exploratory drilling in Block CI-501, contains an estimated 5 trillion cubic feet of gas and 450 million barrels of condensate—equivalent to roughly 1.4 billion barrels of oil. This makes it Côte d’Ivoire’s second-largest hydrocarbon discovery after the Baleine field, which is expected to produce 150,000 barrels of oil and 200 million cubic feet of gas daily when its third phase launches. The discovery confirms the broader Calao channel complex’s potential and positions these resources as crucial assets for meeting Côte d’Ivoire’s growing domestic energy demands.
