Eritrea Seeks UN Intervention Over Ethiopia Tensions

By Al Jazeera·Edited by Editor TO·

Eritrea has asked the United Nations Security Council to take deterrent measures against Ethiopia, which it accused of declaring war over the Tigray conflict. Ethiopia had accused Eritrea of an incursion into Ethiopian territory. According to Addis Ababa, Eritrean troops had advanced as far as 60 kilometers into its territory. Eritrea has, however, denied the allegations. The country’s foreign minister, Osman Saleh, invoked Chapter VII of the UN Charter, which permits deterrent measures ranging from sanctions to military force, and called Ethiopia’s allegations of an Eritrean incursion a pretext for aggression. The dispute comes as Ethiopian forces battle an alliance of armed groups, which includes the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, seeking to overthrow Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government. Addis Ababa accuses Eritrea of supporting the TPLF, while both governments have traded accusations of aggression.
