Eritrean troops are reportedly moving deeper into Ethiopia’s Tigray region as fighting intensifies between federal forces and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front. Residents of Adigrat told the BBC they saw dozens of military trucks moving from the Eritrean border toward central Tigray, some of which carried heavy weapons. These developments are particularly significant because Ethiopia and Eritrea fought alongside each other against the TPLF during the 2020–2022 Tigray war. However, relations have since deteriorated over Ethiopia’s ambitions for access to the Red Sea. The two countries severed diplomatic relations last week, with Addis Ababa expelling 10 Eritrean diplomats. Addis Ababa has accused Eritrea of backing the TPLF, but Asmara has denied the allegation. The development risks widening the conflict across the Horn of Africa region.
