Ethiopia and Canada Agree Trade Terms

Source: Pulse of Africa·Edited by Editor TO·

Ethiopia and Canada have concluded bilateral market access negotiations tied to Ethiopia’s bid to join the World Trade Organization, signing a protocol at the WTO’s Geneva headquarters. Ethiopian officials described WTO membership as an important component of the country’s economic reform agenda, with the potential to improve competitiveness, attract investment, expand productive capacity, and strengthen access to regional and international markets. Canada welcomed the conclusion of negotiations and reaffirmed its support for Ethiopia’s accession, pointing to opportunities for increased trade and investment across several sectors. The agreement represents a milestone in bilateral economic cooperation between the countries, which established diplomatic relations in 1965. It also advances Ethiopia’s broader membership bid ahead of the eighth meeting of its WTO accession working party, scheduled for November 2026.
