Ethiopia has formally submitted a bid to host the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations, with its football federation calling its government-backed proposal a sign of full readiness to host the tournament. Ethiopia has hosted AFCON three times, most recently in 1976, but its current infrastructure presents significant challenges. Only one stadium, the 52,000-seat Bahir Dar Stadium, currently meets CAF standards. While the country is constructing a new international stadium in Addis Ababa, set to be completed in 2027, it remains uncertain whether the country can provide enough compliant venues for a 24-team event. Ethiopia’s security situation could pose an additional obstacle, with several regions experiencing conflict and political instability. The country faces competition from a joint Southern African bid involving Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, and it remains to be seen which of the two bids will sway CAF.
